What’s in your share?

  • Celery

  • Endive

  • Red Storage Onions*

  • Tomatoes

  • Potatoes*

  • Leeks

  • Garlic*

  • Peppers

  • Storage Beets*

* All of these items don’t need to be eaten before your next share comes, so don’t worry if you can’t get through this heavy share right away. These things will last for months if stored correctly!

Onions and potatoes should be stored away from each other and out of the fridge, out of direct sunlight. Sunlight causes potatoes to turn green.

Store your garlic with your onions.

Beets should be kept in the fridge in a bag. We usually keep a big ziplock bag in our fridge for all of our roots (carrots, turnips, radishes, and beets). Cut the greens off before storage. If the greens are on, they will get super slimy and compromise the shelf life of the root. Cut the greens off before storage. We will refer to any roots without greens as “storage roots”. As frost begins to damage greens, you will start to see carrots and beets coming your way without their greens.

Celery: if you haven’t tried celery grown on a small scale, you’re in for some flavor. Our celery tends to have a much stronger flavor and less water content than conventional celery. Truthfully, it tends to be more fibrous, too, so we like to cut it really small (unless I’m using it as a shovel for peanut butter!). It freezes well, so if you’re finding that you don’t need as much as we gave you before it starts to wilt, pre-cut it and freeze it for later! It makes a mean broth or stock, and a little goes a long way.
