* Oneida Gold Potatoes - are a yellow potato variety similar to Yukon Gold. We prefer to grow this variety because we’ve found it to have better disease resistance than Yukon Gold. Oneida Golds are excellent for baking, boiling, and mashing.
We’ve come to the end of our fifth farm season, which seems like a milestone. At this point, we’ve tackled the basics; figuring out a field layout that works for us, learning how to plan our workweeks to have an efficient flow, and for the most part, the crops that work for us and our members. We feel pretty lucky and proud to have gotten here.
Now comes the next step in our evolution as farmers - to explore the nuances of farming that new farmers often don’t have the know-how or time for. We want to learn more about soil science and fertility as a whole, but also within our particular farm. We want to better learn and observe our crops and our soil so that knowing what they need and when is more instinctual, similar to how we know when our bodies are thirsty or hungry. We want to explore how the small-scale farm fits into a global food system and what that looks like. We want to explore how to make farming a dignified and financially dependable work option.
And we want to do these things all while continuing to grow food for our community. Food is powerful; it can bring about intense emotions, it can bring people together, it can create war, and sometimes it’s the only thing we have in common with our neighbors, which is why we’re so passionate about how it’s produced. We are so thankful that you’re on this journey with us, and we hope you will join us for seasons to come!
