We’re about to enter the time of the farm season when everything happens all at once. There is tons to harvest everyday, beds that need to be cleared of old crops and prepped and planted with new ones, beds of garlic, onions, and potatoes to harvest and cure, and it’s hot AF. I don’t have much to say this week because first of all, I’m inhaling my lunch as I type this because we are very busy and getting from day to day is all we can do. However, but I do have a beautifully inspirational quote that I heard from our 7-year-old CSA member the other day. I was talking to his mom about how I should have been pulling weeds instead of visiting and feeling slightly conflicted about it. I had no idea he was in ear shot, but he turned around and said, “I mean, what’s the point of growing all this good food if you can’t even have any fun?” It really hit me hard.
Farming cannot be “sustainable” if the farmers don’t have a balanced life. I think we do a pretty good job of making time for work and time for play, but the farming lifestyle doesn’t always allow for this dichotomy, and we don’t necessarily want the dichotomy. This year, we’ve become a little more comfortable with the coexistence of certain weeds, and be taking the time to be with friends and family or pursuing personal interests instead. There will always be times of busyness and stress, but it’s important to balance them out with some fun.
