A couple seasons back we joined the Wisconsin Farmers Union. We had been looking for a slightly better standard of living as farmers but, between honing our skills in the field and all our fancy business planning, we finally began to realize that a farmer can only do so much on their own. Today, we know our struggle for a better standard of living, a decent safety net, safe public infrastructure, the ability to retire, or even a 40 hour work week is far from personal but rather thoroughly interwoven through each and every one of our abilities to realize these basic necessities. Martin Luther King Jr. reminds us, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.” From our respect for this interconnectivity, we understand that this fight, this burden, is not ours alone, but always alongside others, especially those people and places most vulnerable, most disadvantaged, and already most injured.
Last month, we were showcased in the Wisconsin Farmers Union’s monthly publication and I wrote a little something about this sentiment.
