What’s in your share?
Carrots
Heirloom and Slicing Tomatoes
Sweet Peppers
Cherry Tomatoes
Onions
Cucumbers
It’s hard to think about fall and winter while its so ding dang humid and hot, but we’re planting the heck out of the field for fall. Onions and garlic are almost fully cured and we’ll begin digging potatoes next week. Our high tunnels have been almost entirely transitioned over to fall crops and will be fully planted by the end of next week. We’ll leave the tomatoes in for a few more weeks, but eventually, as their quality declines, we have to make the call whether its worth desperately hanging onto an old crop, or making space for a fresh new one that will thrive in the short days and cooler nights.
Our work days have been really busy, making for tired farmers. This is one of the biggest conflicts of summer, in my opinion. There’s so much fun stuff going on every night of the week and weekend, and we really want to do as much stuff as we can before the weather turns and folks hunker down for the winter. It also happens to be our busiest time of year, so we’re really just trying to do the work that’s necessary in the field, while taking the time to enjoy this fleeting summer season; getting the most of hangs the porch with friends, at the beach, on the river, dancing our pants off to live music, and probably not getting enough sleep.
That said, enjoy this summer share; the cucumbers will likely be the last you receive. The summer squash is totally done, and the big tomato flush is over (making for a much more manageable weekly harvest and distribution). Peppers are coming in hot (but mostly sweet) so get ready for some fajitas, philly cheesesteaks, gazpacho, and stuffed peppers.
